Background:
In late 2017, Liberty and Aaron Smart of Victoria had their life turned completely upside down. Their very active, healthy and beautiful 5 year old daughter, Adaea was transported to BC Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) on December 17th, 2017. Adaea spent 20 weeks in hospital undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatments with her mom Liberty by her side while her dad Aaron and her 3 year old brother Alden visited back and forth. On May 11th, 2018 Adaea and family were discharged and back in Victoria getting back into the routine of day to day life. In June and July, Adaea’s check ups at BC Children’s Hospital went well and her team of doctors were happy with how she was progressing. Adaea was enjoying her summer swimming, attending summer camps including Camp Goodtimes and spending lots of quality time with family and friends. Unfortunately just last week, Adaea relapsed with AML and is back at BC Children’s Hospital where she has already under gone one round of chemotherapy. The treatment plan this round will involve more aggressive chemo and a bone marrow transplant and they are expected to be in Vancouver for approximately 6 months. As with the last round, Adaea has yet again been so strong and brave and is truly an inspiration to anyone she meets.
